Supporting ambitious efforts for more efficient operations

In 2021, DCO, with Secretariat partners, broadened the scope of operational service provision for the Resident Coordinator system   

  • An estimated $11 million were saved, up from $4.6 million in 2020, through property management services, international travel and high-value procurement services offered by the UN Secretariat.  
  • The transition of human resources, procurement and other non-location dependent operational services from UNDP to the Secretariat will be completed by mid-2022. 
  • The roll-out of the Business Operations Strategy was completed ahead of the December 2021 deadline. 
  • The co-location of UN Information Centres and Resident Coordination Offices in the same premises increased to 68%, compared to 64% in 2020.

Efficiency initiatives across the UN development system saved over $195 million in 2021, a 53% increase from $127 million in 2020

  • The roll-out of all Business Operations Strategies increased savings by 144%, or +$25 million, compared to 2020 
  • Entity-specific initiatives increased savings by 47%, or +$45 million, compared to 2020
  • Efficiencies from bilateral initiatives were 19% (-USD 3M) lower than 2020 figures

       This corresponds to 63% of the initial estimated efficiency gains of $ 310 million yearly by 2022.
