Building efficiencies: The work of the RC system

The RC system concluded its operational services transition from the UN Development Programme (UNDP) to the UN Secretariat, generating savings amounting to an estimated $3.4 million in 2022 and nearly $10 million since 2020

Reduced costs

The RC system reduced costs purchasing vehicles in 71% of field locations21% of them either hybrid or electric – avoiding car-rental costs while committing to environmental sustainability.

Service provision

Effective service provision to clients has been continuously reviewed and planned with UN Secretariat entities and UN Service providers at global and regional levels

Resource planning platforms

The use of the UN Secretariat enterprise resource planning platforms to conduct all business processes of the RC system has been enabled

The Secretary-General’s delegation of authority to Resident Coordinators and the Development Coordination Office (DCO) for management of financial and human resources, procurement, travel and property has been fully implemented

The RC system was also critical in enabling efficiencies gained through the transformation of the UN development system's business operations

$11.5 million

Deployed by DCO since 2019

The Development Coordination Office (DCO) has directly invested $11.5 million since 2019 in specialized capacities and other resources to advance workstreams related to Business Operations Strategies, Common Back Offices and Common Premises

$405 million

System-wide cost-efficiencies

Cost-efficiencies achieved by the UN development system collectively and through single UN entity efforts are estimated at around $405 million – an increase of 47% from $275 million in 2021.

The role of the Development Coordination Office (DCO)

The new Efficiency dashboard and the new Common Premises platform created by DCO contain information for over 3,500 premises worldwide, spanning 3.8million m2 and accommodation for 120,000 UN personnel.
