The United Nations in Brunei Darussalam

The United Nations Multi-country Office that is located in Malaysia, covers Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.

The Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator (UN RCO) engages with the Government of Brunei on various matters and is in the process of mapping the work of UN development system agencies in Brunei Darussalam towards a more coordinated approach. Brunei Darussalam is a high-income country with a population of over 400,000 people, and has a strong commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the country’s national vision, Wawasan Brunei 2035. Wawasan Brunei 2035 aims for recognition of its educated, highly skilled and accomplished citizens, and sets out Brunei’s aspirations for a high quality of life and dynamic and sustainable economy by 2035.

In 2016, the Government of Brunei Darussalam created a multi-stakeholder Special Committee for the Implementation of the SDGs comprising senior officials from relevant ministries and agencies. This committee was created to facilitate the inclusion of SDG indicators in Brunei Darussalam’s development plans as well as to ensure and monitor the implementation of the SDGs in line with national priorities. Brunei presented its first Voluntary National Review (VNR) at the 2020 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, and its VNR process was overseen by a special committee, co-chaired at the ministerial level by the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MOFE) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
