The United Nations in the Kyrgyz Republic

The Kyrgyz Republic joined the United Nations on 2 March 1992 as a new independent state. Since then the UN has been supporting Kyrgyzstan to achieve its national priorities, which respond to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UN System in Kyrgyzstan is made up of UN affiliated programmes, funds, specialized agencies and other entities working in the country. At present it consists of 27 members, 12 of which are non-residents.

The aim of the UN system in the Kyrgyz Republic is to assist the Country in implementing development reforms and provide support in the achievement of internationally agreed Sustainable Development Goals.

Milestones

  1.  Sustainable and inclusive economic growth, industrial, rural and agricultural development, food security and nutrition. The UN commitment is to ensure that each intervention focuses on people - especially women, children, and the most vulnerable. Using a three-fold approach, supporting people, institutions and policy makers, the UN will contribute to economic growth, decent work, and promote labour opportunities.

  2. Good Governance, rule of law, human rights and gender equality. In 2018 the UN system in Kyrgyzstan partnered with the Parliament, the Government civil society organizations, CSOs and key target groups – women, youth and vulnerable populations to align its assistance around SDGs 5, 10 and 16.

  3. Environment, climate change, and disaster risk management. The Government’s Programme for 2018-2022 emphasizes environmental protection and implementation of the principles of green economy. By 2022, communities are more resilient to climate and disaster risks and are engaged in sustainable and inclusive natural resource management and risk-informed development.

  4. Social Protection, Health and Education. System change which produces tangible results at the level of human capital, i.e. a child, youth, mother/women and family has been a major focus for the UN. By 2022, social protection, health and education systems are more effective and inclusive, and provide quality services.

  5. Support to Sustainable Development Goals and Advocacy. The UN system supported the Kyrgyz Government and conducted the Mainstreaming, Acceleration and Policy Support (MAPS mission) to provide integrated support in identifying bottlenecks that hinder development progress and recommend accelerators that will create multiple synergies expected to advance the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the country.
