The United Nations in Madagascar
Madagascar joined the UN on September 20th, 1960, just after the declaration of its independence. Entities of the United Nations system have been operating in the country since that date and working in collaboration with the Government, the private sector and civil society in the social, economic and humanitarian fields.
The main activities of the United Nations system focus on three pillars: The promotion of human rights in Madagascar, peace and security, and development.
Actions and advocacy for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a priority. UN entities work closely with the State to help achieve the SDGs and implement the country's National Development Plan.
Coherence of the United Nations system
The United Nations system is composed of a diverse group of entities. Actions and advocacy for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a priority. UN entities work closely with the State to help achieve the SDGs and implement the country's National Development Plan.
The United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), a strategic reference framework guiding the coordinated interventions of the entities of the United Nations system, was signed on June 10th, 2014. The UNDAF outlines the common and coordinated interventions of the United Nations System in Madagascar in response to national priorities covering the period 2015-2019.
Areas of intervention are structured around three major outcomes:
- Access to income and employment opportunities for vulnerable groups and improved resilience of these groups for inclusive and equitable growth to achieve sustainable development.
- Peaceful governance that protects human rights at the central and local levels.
- Access to and use of sustainable and quality basic social services.
The focus areas prioritized in the UNDAF 2015-2019 consider the comparative advantages of the entities of the United Nations System, as well as 2030 Agenda and emerging challenges facing the country. Joint work plans for the implementation of UNDAF 2015-2019 are also implemented, bringing together all entities in Madagascar based on their respective areas of focus.
