The United Nations in Malaysia

The United Nations Multi-country Office that is located in Malaysia, covers Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.

The United Nations has supported the people and the Government of Malaysia for more than 50 years. Over that period, the United Nations has offered development assistance, ensuring that no one is left behind as outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and striving towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Currently there are twenty-one (21) UN agencies serving Malaysia: UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA, WHO, UNU-IIGH, UNHCR, IOM, WFP-UNHRD, UNCDF, UNAIDS, UNDRR, UNEP, UNESCO, UN HABITAT, ITU, UNIDO, ILO, ITC, OHCHR, UNODC, UN Women as well as global and regional centres for UNDP, WHO, WFP and UNCTAD-ASYCUDA

In Malaysia, the soon to be signed United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2021-2025 (UNSDCF) constitutes the UN Development System’s support to Malaysia’s strong commitment to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs, and its aspirations to become a high-income, inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and advanced democratic nation. The UNSDCF articulates the UN system’s collective support to the country in addressing bottlenecks, trade-offs and synergies in its journey towards achieving the 2030 Agenda; especially the UN system’s support to strengthen an effective whole-of-nation approach to achieve the SDGs.

Strategic Priority Areas for the UN Development System:

• Strategic Priority Area 1 - PEOPLE: Leaving No One Behind - Ensuring a prosperous nation through inclusivity and well-being for all. By 2025, poor and vulnerable groups living in Malaysia, benefit from more equity focused and high-quality social services as well as a social protection system that ensures all have an adequate standard of living.
• Strategic Priority Area 2 - PLANET: Environment, Climate Change, and Resilience. By 2025, environmental sustainability and resilience are mainstreamed as priorities within the national development agenda, across all sectors and levels of society.
• Strategic Priority Area 3 - PROSPERITY: Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth. By 2025, Malaysia is making meaningful progress towards an economy that is inclusive, innovative and sustainable across all income groups and productive sectors.
• Strategic Priority Area 4 - PEACE: Social Cohesion, Governance and Human Rights. By 2025, Malaysia has strengthened democratic governance and all people living in Malaysia benefit from more cohesive society, strengthened governance and participation.
• Enhancing Results through Coordination and Partnerships - The results that the UN in Malaysia is aspiring to contribute to over the next five years, as set out in the Strategic Priority Areas and Collaborative Outputs in this UNSDCF, will be enhanced through effective coordination and building of critical partnerships, primarily with Government at national and subnational levels, and with the private sector, civil society and academia
