The United Nations in South Sudan

South Sudan was admitted as a member of the United Nations on 14 July 2011, the same year the country attained its independence. In South Sudan, the UN Country Team contributes towards national development priorities and the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development through the United Nations Cooperation Framework (UNCF), a joint cooperation agreement between the UN and Government of South Sudan.

The current Cooperation Framework (UNCF) runs from 2019 to 2021. UN assistance under the Framework is delivered in a coherent and coordinated manner, seizing opportunities to support recovery and resilience and accelerate the Agenda 2030 with an overall budget of US$650 million. Funding for the Cooperation Framework has been steadily increasing in recent years.

Support under the UNCF is focused on the following for priority areas:

1. Building peace and strengthening governance

2. Improving food security and recovering local economies

3. Strengthening social services

4. Empowering women and youth

The modality of implementing the Cooperation Framework includes nine joint flagship programes under the Core Contribution, including:  fighting  gender-based violence, providing essential health services, educating children and youth, ensuring food and nutrition, improving governance and access to justice, area based economic recovery, supporting families returning from displacement, supporting the preparations for a full national census, and empowering women.

  1. In 2011, South Sudan joined the UN, with UN support towards the Country’s transition from conflict to recovery and on a path to development.
  2. In 2013 civil conflict broke out and disrupted development efforts. In response to this the UNCT supported: the return and reintegration of refugees and Internally Displaced People, the peace process and facilitated a return to recovery and long-term development, provided lifesaving support to vulnerable populations in South Sudan.
  3. In 2018 the situation began to improve with the peace agreement, and in 2020 a new Transitional Government of National Unity is in place. UNCT support is increasingly focused on recovery and resilience.
