Every year, International Women’s Day on March 8th offers an opportunity for reflection on how far we’ve come and how far we have to go as a global

As female leaders Isabel, Leticia and Rosibel are role models for other young women willing to challenge the cultural norms which used to restrict them to caregiving and domestic roles.

The global population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion people by 2050, which will significantly increase the demand for food. The steady increase in hunger since 2014, after a decade of progress, indicates that there is a need to accelerate and scale-up action to strengthen the resilience and adaptability of food systems and livelihoods. 

Curbing women’s access to work results in a 21% drop in their employment levels by mid-2022, and a steep reduction in GDP of up to $1 billion, or 5% of the Afghan GDP.

From legal protection to healthcare access to social inclusion and more, LGBQI+ people encounter numerous challenges that threaten their dignity and equality. When combined with aspects of race, income, age, ability/disability, LGBTQI+ people are often more vulnerable yet are often excluded from social policies and planning.

Our UN teams are on the ground in 162 countries and territories, coordinating joint programmes and tackling a range of priorities and initiatives — from climate action and food security to gender equality and safety of civilians.
